FRIDAY, August 17, 2007 New River Fishing Report

By weasel at 11:37 pm on Friday, August 17, 2007

We at first apologize for the technical problems we are still experiencing with updating more often.

Today the New River is running seriously low. The gauge in Hinton reported that it was running at about 1200 feet per second.

That is really good for the concentration of the fish. This water level makes for great fishing!

They are doing alot of good top water fishing, using crank bait. Minnow imitations seem to be catching as well. They are catching good numbers with several larger ones weighing about 3 to 5 pounds.

At the first of September, geese season opens and we will be running a limited number of Blast & Cast trips. The cost will be aproximately $400.00. You will need to purchase a Migratory Bird Stamp and of course, bring your gun.

As I said before, there is very limited space on these types of trips. So if you are interested, you will need to call immediately for reservations to be able to get a boat for the trip.

As Always Catch & Release!!

Monday July 23, 2007

By weasel at 10:59 pm on Monday, July 23, 2007

With all the rain fall last week, it brought the New River back up one foot to where it is running at about 1 to 1.5 foot below normal for this time of year. The temperature in the New River is quite warm.

The clarity had been cloudy for a few days and is clearing nicely. During the cloudy days large cat fish were being caught with minnows and helgramites.

Fishing is good to excellent right now, especially top water fishing. Three to four pound fish have been being caught.
For fly fishermen, you could not find a better time to come between now and this next month. We are catching lots of fish on top water with poppers and dry flies. Mugglers have also been successful.

Thanks for checking out our blog, and we hope to see you on the New River. We will be updating this post twice per week. As always, please catch and release!

New River Fishing Report - June 18, 2007

By weasel at 12:23 pm on Monday, June 18, 2007

Sorry it’s been so long for an update on this page. We have been experiencing technical difficulties.

The water level on the New river is at summertime normal. The clarity is great this week. We had some muddy water last week. The water temperature is about 70-75 degrees.

The last few days have been very good. We are starting to catch some larger fish. We’ve been having good luck with rubber baits, like grubs and worms. As always, crank baits are producing large numbers.

Flyfishing has been good to excellent this week with the water temperature and levels.

As always, great fishing and remember, Catch and Release!!

Tuesday May 22, 2007 - New River Fishing Report

By weasel at 12:24 pm on Tuesday, May 22, 2007

The New River is running at about 2.5 feet and very clear . It is in great shape for the upcoming weekend. The water temp is at 65 degrees.

We fished several days, (with a few overnite trips) on the New River this week and caught large a large amount of smallmouth. The largest being a 3.5 lb. female that still had her eggs. As an added bonus, two 16″ walleye and a few Kentucky bass were caught.

With the weather and stable conditions of the New River, fishing is as good as it gets for this time of year.

With spawn being here, please remember to catch & release!

Good Luck!

New River Gorge Fishing Report - May 7th

By weasel at 12:25 pm on Monday, May 7, 2007

The New River is a bit high at 7ft. but is clearing nicely and should be in great shape by Thursday and the upcoming weekend.

There are still several fish being taken in slower back water, most on live bait nightcrawlers, chubs and crawfish. Large crank baits in darker colors seem to work best, this also holds true for jigs and rubber worms use a little more weight, at least 1/4 oz. or more.

While high water is not the best for smallmouth, catfishing is very good with large numbers at night and quite a few in the day. Water temperature is 60 and the spawn is close meaning large smallies the next few weeks, remember to catch and release.

Good Luck,

Weasel
